ONECA is pleased to share the completed final products resulting from our Step by Step: Taking Steps to Increase my Success in Postsecondary project. These resources were designed to support communities with supporting their learners with accessing postsecondary education. Specifically, the resources were designed with mature First Nation women in mind, but much of the content could be applied to various circumstances such as engaging mature learners in general, or perhaps even young people that are feeling unprepared for making the transition to postsecondary. The resources address the following:

• Postsecondary readiness
• Confidence-building
• Career exploration
• Support with navigating postsecondary systems
• Creation of supportive, inclusive learning spaces where Indigenous learners can feel seen, heard, and empowered.

The project resulted in a total of 3 printable resources – a Facilitator Guide, a Learner Package, and a Learner Workbook. This work also included the development of 8 video resources.

This program has been designed to be easily delivered by your own community facilitators. It is ready to pick up and deliver, complete with six modules and 19 lessons (30 hours total). If you are seeing a need in your community to engage and connect aspiring postsecondary students with preparing themselves to take the step towards postsecondary education, you can use (and adapt) these ready-to-go resources to meet your local community’s needs. ONECA works hard to develop and deliver resources that First Nations can put to use in their own community contexts.

Course Outcomes

• Increase access and support for Indigenous women and prepare them to apply for postsecondary while giving them resources to support their success.
• Strengthen connections between the learner and education support services and resources or institutions.
• Support learners in building confidence, networks, and peer connections.
• Provide accessible materials online that exist on the ONECA website.
• Provide practical tools and guidance for navigating applications and funding
