Additionally, a four-part video series has been created to help students make an informed decision about their Post Secondary path.
The Ontario Native Education Counselling Association has been a leader in creating Transition tools and supports to assist FNMI students making their way through all levels of education. ONECA will be expanding on the existing materials by creating Virtual Tours of all of the Aboriginal Units at the Post Secondary Institutions and the Aboriginal Consortium in Ontario. The Virtual Tours will not only support students in their pursuit of higher education; it will also provide an opportunity for Post Secondary Institutions to showcase their programs and services and make a critical connection with students.
Our mission is to create a tool that students, parents, teachers and student advisors can use to help FNMI students in their transition to post-secondary education. Executive Director, Roxane Manitowabi, says, “This will be a great asset for our Counsellors because they will be able to access all of the information in one place on the transitions portal and they too will be able to make the connection with the Counsellors and Staff at the institutions through the project”. Producer and Director Jason Jenkins and Transitions Coordinator Daniella Robinson will be traveling to the Post Secondary Institutions and the Aboriginal Institutes creating videos that showcase the programs and services available to FNMI students. For those who are thinking about attending college or university, this will make the process easier and will be especially useful to those students who are unable to travel the distance to see the institutions in person.
With the virtual tours, we are enhancing FNMI student support that already exists with new tools that makes the information more easily accessible. This project will be dynamic, interactive and inviting, and we are thrilled to be moving forward with it.
